Beyond Consequences, Logic and Control
This Saturday, Janda and I had the opportunity to go to a wonderful training by the Beyond Consequences Institute. The techniques we learned are for working with behaviors in children specifically those associated with trauma. These techniques work for all children and all behaviors. It focuses not on changing the child but changing how you deal with the child. Anyone who is interested, I am more than willing to share what we learned! There are several different Online Parenting classes that BCI puts on. The next one is specifically for mothers. It is entirely online for 5 days. (saturday for 3 hours, sunday for 3 hours, monday, tuesday and Wed. night for 1 1/2 hours.) I believe it is in November. If you are interested in registering, you can do so online at http://www.beyondconsequences.com/. If there are enough people who are interested, we could probably set it up to do at school. The evening portions are from 8:00-9:30pm. If you have suffered a trauma or if your child has, I highly recommend this course!! Trauma includes prenatal stress, birth trauma, abuse, neglect etc. BC emphasises that if you haven't dealt with your past, you can't effectively help your child. We all have triggers, specific things that our child or another child will do that will set us off (button pushing behaviors). We need to learn to identify those triggers so that we can work through them in order to help our children.

FIre Safety
Next week is Fire Safety Week!
We will be doing some fun activities including making a Spot the Fire Dog game and making 5 little firefighters! We will also be practicing a fire drill, listening to a smoke detector and looking at pictures of fire fighters in all their gear. If you or someone you know is a fire fighter, we would love to have someone visit our classroom. We will be emphasizing that even thought they may look scary, you never hide from a firefighter.
Please take the time to discuss with your child excape routes from your house should there be a fire. It is a scary thing to think about so be aware of how your child is reacting to the discussion.

Help for Picky Eaters
We have all experienced picky eaters! They may not like the food, they may have heard other kids say that they don't like the food or maybe they just don't like the texture. Whatever the reason, it is something that parents need to deal with. I spoke with our OT here at school and she gave me some great tips!
1. Your child must have one of everything on their plate. (they don't need to eat it, they just have to have it on their plate). Try and serve your dinner buffet style and allow them to dish up their food.
2. Have your child at least lick or touch all of their food. (Most kids could take one bite.)
3. Don't allow "yuck" at the table!
4. Talk about healthy eating for healthy bodies! We need all different kinds of foods to grow and be healthy!
5. Serve fruits and veggies with dips such as Peanut Butter, Yogurt or salad dressing.
6. Make a chart! Your brain needs to experience things 10 times before it decides if something is good or bad. Make a chart of a few fruits or veggies that you want your child to try. Keep track of each time they lick it or take a bite of it.
7. It is OK to puree veggies or fruits and put them in soups, cupcakes etc. but don't tell them after they have eaten it that they just ate Carrots or tomatoes or whatever it is that you put in there. They will learn not to trust you.
