FIre Safety

Next week is Fire Safety Week!
We will be doing some fun activities including making a Spot the Fire Dog game and making 5 little firefighters!  We will also be practicing a fire drill, listening to a smoke detector and looking at pictures of fire fighters in all their gear.  If you or someone you know is a fire fighter, we would love to have someone visit our classroom.  We will be emphasizing that even thought they may look scary, you never hide from a firefighter.
Please take the time to discuss with your child excape routes from your house should there be a fire.  It is a scary thing to think about so be aware of how your child is reacting to the discussion.

Help for Picky Eaters

We have all experienced picky eaters!  They may not like the food, they may have heard other kids say that they don't like the food or maybe they just don't like the texture.  Whatever the reason, it is something that parents need to deal with. I spoke with our OT here at school and she gave me some great tips!

1. Your child must have one of everything on their plate.  (they don't need to eat it, they just have to have it on their plate). Try and serve your dinner buffet style and allow them to dish up their food.

2. Have your child at least lick or touch all of their food.  (Most kids could take one bite.)

3.  Don't allow "yuck" at the table!

4. Talk about healthy eating for healthy bodies!  We need all different kinds of foods to grow and be healthy!

5. Serve fruits and veggies with dips such as Peanut Butter, Yogurt or salad dressing.

6.  Make a chart!  Your brain needs to experience things 10 times before it decides if something is good or bad.  Make a chart of a few fruits or veggies that you want your child to try.  Keep track of each time they lick it or take a bite of it.

7. It is OK to puree veggies or fruits and put them in soups, cupcakes etc.  but don't tell them after they have eaten it that they just ate Carrots or tomatoes or whatever it is that you put in there.  They will learn not to trust you.

Next Week

We had a great time this week doing the Tooty Ta and welcoming each other in a foreign language. (Jambo!)  We are getting parents AND kids dancing and singing now!  What fun!  This week's infant craft was making eye candy cards.  They are cards with bold black designs against white.  They are wonderful for eye and brain development!  Next week watch for the Baby Baggie Book!  All familes are asked to bring a family picture.  If you are the parent of an infant - 12 month old, please bring 5-6 pictures to make a fun baggie book that will stand up to the drool!  All children will be drawing a family picture to display in the hallway!

Butterflies!

We saw caterpillars turn into chrysalides and then watched as the chrysalides changed in color to reveal the butterfly inside.  After about 10 days, we got to see the butterflies emerge from their chrysalides!  It was very exciting for everyone!  Check out the pictures we got of the butterfly emerging!
