Gearing up for a new year!!
Wow! I just looked at my calendar and realized that we only have 3 weeks until we get to have class together again!! This summer has gone by very quickly!! I have been to some great trainings this summer including a week long training institute for Reading Corps and a really fun training with Dr. Jean! You may not know her name, but anyone who has had a child go through preschool with us, she is the one who sings the Peanut Butter Song aka: underwear song. Through one of my jobs through the county, I will have access to a lot of Dr. Jean resources! So, thank you to Otter Tail county Caring connections for a great year with Dr. Jean!! I will be sending out registration forms soon! if you haven't registered yet, please do so soon! If you have registered, I will send out a reminder as to when you start and what class you signed up for. Please encourage any families that you may know of to join us for a great year of learning while playing!!

Minnesota Reading Corps
I just returned from a fabulous 4 day training in the Minnesota Reading Corps! Our district is lucky to have 3 MRC literacy tutors! Two of us are in Pre-K, Deanna and Myself and Michelle Olson is our K-3 literacy tutor! We learned a lot, had a lot of fun and are all excited to start a new year of literacy enrichment! If you haven't heard or MRC, please look it up! We are a group of almost 800 literacy tutors throughout the state of MN. We have done some amazing things! MRC in Pre-K has better prepared our students for Kindergarten!
In fall 2010 we had:
10% on target for Kindergarten in RHYMING
50% on target for Kindergarten in LETTER NAMING
25% on target for Kindergarten in PICTURE NAMING
27% on target for Kindergarten in ALLITERATION
10% on target for Kindergarten in LETTER SOUND
By Spring 2011 we had:
75% of Pre-K students on target in RHYMING
75% on target in LETTER NAMING
100% on target in PICTURE NAMING
60% on target in ALLITERATION
65 % on target in LETTER SOUND
This is a direct result of the hard work of our MRC tutors! Parkers Prairie is one of a few sites in greater Minnesota with tutors in both Pre-K and K-3!
Ask us about more information on the Minnesota Reading Corps and come check us out online at

Make learning fun for your child with this interactive alphabet game that lets her cast for letters and even tackle a bit of basic spelling.
Materials
Small screw eye
12-inch dowel
12-inch length of string
2- by 6-inch piece of card stock
Hole punch
2- by 2-inch piece of adhesive magnetic sheet
Metal frozen juice can lids (the kind without sharp edges)
Letter stickers or permanent marker
Total Time Needed: 2-3 Hours
Instructions
To make the pieces: Secure the screw eye into the end of the dowel. Tie the string to the screw eye with a tight knot.
Fold the card stock into thirds. Punch holes in the paper as shown, then tie the loose end of the string through the holes. Adhere the magnet to the bottom of the card stock.
Attach one letter sticker to each lid or write the letters on the lids with a permanent marker. Start with your child's name and add letters as you collect more lids.
To play: Simply scatter the metal "fish" on the floor and show your child how to "hook? them with the magnetic fishing pole. Once she gets the hang of it, challenge her to catch specific letters or even spell her name.
